Gujarat high court on
Tuesday a issued notice to the state government over a PIL seeking
direction that instead of a bureaucrat, a person with reputation in
society or a retired judge can be appointed to the post of vigilance
commissioner, which is vacant for the past six months. On
recommendations of N Sathanathan Committee, the central vigilance
commissioner came to be appointed by the Centre since 1964 in order to
curb corruption in government machinery.
